It's hard to believe that the Olympics started two weeks ago and are ending tomorrow. I bought the fabled Olympic mittens two weeks ago Saturday, before they became such a hot commodity. Nothing like a showing on Oprah to ramp up the frenzy. Two people asked me where I got them as I was getting lunch at the deli on Friday!
We spent the evening watching Martin win men's gold in curling, as well as basking in the replays of the golds and bronze medals we won today.
Tomorrow, we'll be glued to the TV watching the hockey finale. Here's hoping for gold number 14!

The finished fireplace
Yes! It's finally finished...well except for a little bit of touch-up paint that the (most excellent) fireplace installers are coming back to do. The marble hearth went on yesterday and we love it!
Brian and his guys did an awesome job finishing it for us (Brian suggested the marble and the tile), considering it was his first fireplace. We like it when he experiments on us...he did our pergola for us as well.

It was too good to last
I thought we might escape winter without getting out the snowblower again. But, it was not to be. We were supposed to get about 10 cm this afternoon, plus freezing rain. Yippee.
A long strange journey
It's been an incredible long and strange journey for my parents, but they finally have the first of three wind turbines officially up on their farm. This is a view taken by my mom, standing basically at their back door, looking towards the back of their farm. Woohoo! Long live green energy!

Learning new things through sport
Family Day wasn't so much fun for me as I finally succumbed to the stomach bug that went through the house earlier in the month. I thought I was home free, but apparently it was just laying it wait, ready for me to let my guard down.
So, I spent Monday in bed groaning and moaning, with the Olympics on in the background as I drifted in and out of sleep.
The kids, however, have gotten into the Olympics, and are learning how to cheer on our athletes. At one point yesterday, I woke up enough to watch the final race of Snow Cross (a rollicking good sport). Downstairs I could hear George and the kids cheering on Mike Robertson, the Canadian who led most of the way through the final race, until the US guy, Seth Wescott, took the lead. As they were getting closer to the finish line, I could hear, "GO! GO! GO!" downstairs, and when the US guy won, over the din I heard Blake emit a loud, "Shiiiiiiitttt!"
George denies this actually happened. But, we'll see when we cheer on the next Canadian during a race or hockey game. I'm wondering what will come out of Blake's mouth then.

It's here!!!!
George finally got a copy of his book!! He wrote it with two other authors, but if you look in the bottom right corner, you will in fact see his name on the cover. You can even buy it on Amazon (although they have an older cover displayed for some reason).
All proceeds from the book go to Habitat for Humanity. A big congratulations for all the hard work he put into the book.
He's addicted now and working on book number 2. Stay tuned....

Oh Canada!
Our goddaughter, Cordelia, sang the national anthems (Canada and US) with her school choir for the Rangers game today. (You can just see her on the jumbotron in my cameraphone shot.)
We can happily say we made it to the game to cheer her on. Barely. Blake spent the night puking his guts out, and teaching us that it is possible to puke and sleep at the same time. When you're tired, you're tired. He finally stopped about 3:30 am.
But, who dragged me out of bed this morning? Blake! He was up and going, bouncing around and happily eating away. It was like the night before was a strange nightmare.
So, we did make it to the game (although a little draggier than usual). We saw Cordelia singing--and doing an awesome job. She was totally relaxed in front of the crowd. And, we made it through the first period. Then Faith let me know that she felt sick. Uh-oh! She was pretty pale, so I was just hoping to make it to the car before she threw up. Luckily we made it home, and she laid on the couch all afternoon. By the evening, she was totally fine. Whew.
Of course, George and I are next. We've been sanitizing like crazy, but I fear we are doomed. The last time the kids got sick, we were both laid up for 24 hours feeling like death had run over us and decide we weren't worth the effort.
On the plus side, we did see the Rangers game finish out on TV....they won!

A windy weekend
On Friday Karen and I packed up the kids in the van and headed down to my parents' farm. The motivation for the trip was to see the wind turbine project in action on and around the road I grew up on. My parents are involved in the first wind turbine project in their county, and are currently having three turbines installed on the farm.
My uncle took all of us around in the van to see the turbines, in various states of being built, and the massive amounts of equipment it takes to put them up. William got the biggest kick out the "mighty machines" being used to put up the turbines.
The weather, although sunny, wasn't the greatest for taking pictures. It was, ironically, incredibly windy and cold. But, seeing the majesty o of the turbines up close was worth a little frost bite. Take a look on my flickr photostream for more pictures of the turbines in various states.
The most interesting shot is a picture of the smoke plumes of the nuclear power plant across Lake Erie clearly visible, with the turbines standing in the foreground. Welcome to green energy.
