Sunday Stills: Hats

The Sunday Stills challenge for the week, Hats, was perfect timing for me. We've been hat crazy around here.

My sister-in-law, Kim, is a talented knitter and maker of extremely cute kids' hats. They were over on the weekend, and I caught my niece in the snow, in her snazzy flower hat knitted by her mom.

Snow time

I didn't get a recent shot of Blake in his dragon hat, but here's one I took last year, again courtesy of his Aunt Kim.

All this knitting seemed to inspire Faith. Another aunt, Melissa, is also a knitter. So, she gave Faith a knitting thing-a-majiggy for Christmas. It's a set of round looms(?) that you can easily knit hats and other items on. (And, you can tell I'm so not a knitter.) She made her first hat in about three hours...a gift for her friend. Very cool! She has, however, learned, not to leave her yarn out when her brother and cousin are playing....things get a little unravelled!

Merry Christmas

The best part about having a fireplace is hanging stockings at Christmas! Thanks to my brother-in-law for taking our annual family Christmas shot. Hope you're having an excellent holiday season!

The tooth saga continues

Warning: This will get a little gross.

Faith has lucked out in the tooth department. Her mouth is too small for her adult teeth to come in properly AND her teeth don't fall out very easily. She has used this to her advantage in the past by somehow scamming sympathy tooth money from her great-grandfather.

But, we have now entered into the realm of orthodontic care. So far, this has meant two separate (FREE!) visits to the orthodontist. The results so far have been a trip back to our family dentist, instructions in hand for him to pull out baby teeth. The theory is that by yanking the baby teeth, the adult teeth will pop in, and her mouth will continue to grow, so eventually she'll have room for all the adult teeth with no braces. I am suspicious though, since the orthodontist gave us a tour of her office the first time we visited, specifically showing Faith the "cool" colors of braces available.

So far, the teeth pulling venture hasn't been too bad. The teeth have been loose anyway, and generally came out fairly easily. Other than the visit where she didn't tell the dentist that the freezing wasn't working!!!! I normally sit in the room with her to make sure it's all going well and we're in and out in 15 minutes.

This time, however, she had two molars removed. Two solidly-in-the-mouth, baby molars. So, I took my seat in the room, Blake on my lap, and watched the proceedings. It started with the needle - which doesn't bother her normally, but this time they gave her some extra doses and it HURT. But the kid is so stoic, she doesn't say anything, or even move! I did however see the tear leak out the side of her eye and I just about started balling myself. So much for tough mom.

After the freezing took, Faith was completely fine. I, on the other hand, started getting a little woozy when they pulled out what looked like a giant pair of stainless steel pliers from the drawer. Yikes! But, I figured if she could do it, the least I could do is be in the room for support. But, when they started yanking on the tooth,  I admit that I sort of hid my eyes behind Blake's head. It was not pretty.

But, Faith was great through the whole experience and said she didn't feel a thing. We did, however, postpone a trip to the dollar store that I had promised because she was feeling dizzy after the walk to the car, and generally headachy. Then, we got home and I had to deal with the whole mouth full of bloody gauze...again with the woozy.

I cannot believe how totally brave she was to go through this...evidenced by how big the freakin' teeth were that she got pulled! Seems that the orthodontist knew what she was talking about though, because she had the teeth out yesterday morning, and her adult teeth are already popping through.

I did, however, inform George that he would be taking her to get next set of teeth pulled.

Sunday Stills: Holiday Decorations

It's been so busy around here, I haven't really had much chance to think about Sunday Stills this month. But, as we're a Christmas-crazy household, with my husband leading the pack, I did have to post for this Sunday Stills: Holiday Decorations.

I had a big debate about what to post here, but I went with our early Christmas present from the kids--handpainted ornaments. I photographed them this morning, very early, so I tried out an odd lighting technique instead of flash -- a flashlight. It was an experiment...not entirely successful, but not horrendous either.

This is Faith's creation...

And Blake's...

Missed but not forgotten

George's grandmother passed away at the beginning of the month at the age of 93. We were able to take the kids to see her, and George, and all of Flossie's children were by her side when she died.

Flossie was a very small woman, but that shouldn't have fooled anyone. She was one tough lady who didn't mince words. She is of that generation of women who had wood stoves and did it ALL by hand. When I came into the family scene, what I remember best about her was the way she laughed and the way she played cards. We would sit around George's kitchen table with buckets of pennies (mine borrowed from George) and play for money. This is how I learned to bet on cards (although not very well).

She will be missed by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchilden.

Too cool for a good title - pummelvision

Pummelvision takes all the public photos on your flickr photostream (for example), and puts them into a very cool video format...your life flashes before your eyes. Sweeet! And odd that it starts with a gravestone?

Sunday Stills: Pets

The Sunday Stills challenge this week was Pets. And, since we only have fish, and boring ones at that as they are just goldfish (although raised from babies born in our tank!), I decided to use one of my Dad's pets in the photo instead.

My Dad has always loved horses, and we have grown up with many over the years. (I was almost named Megan, except he didn't want his horse, Meg, and his daughter with the same name.) Now, he has a carriage business for weddings and special events, so his love of horses keeps him fairly busy...although the business pretty much pays for his horse habit. As he's always said, "No one ever gets rich owning horses."

For the past few years, Dad has driven his horse and carriage in the town Santa Claus parade, with Santa waving to the kids from the back seat. This year, Faith and Blake got to ride along for the first time, which they were pretty excited about, although for some reason Blake was able to fall asleep in the middle of the parade! He can sleep anywhere (except in his bed at night).

So, here's the official picture of Sheba, just one of my Dad's many "pets":

Sunday Stills: Profile Pic

This week, the Sunday Stills challenge was a little different. First off, I didn't have to take the picture! And it was to be a profile pic. But, it did have to be with my own camera. So, I asked my photo friend, the very talented Colin, to help out. We actually did this at work in one of our meeting rooms with lots of natural light. Thanks Colin! It was very weird to be in front of the camera instead of behind it, but it was fun.

Sunday Stills: High tech/low tech

The challenge this week was a little more complex: high tech/low tech. You had to photograph something that showed a high tech solution with its accompanying low tech solution. I thought this would be a hard one, and then I looked at my ereader, and I had my subject.

I was a skeptic of ereaders for quite awhile, being a die hard reader of books. (My first novel was Anne of Green Gables, at age 5.) But my friend, January, converted me to the dark side. And once you're there, you can't go back. Having all my books in my purse, at the ready for any spare moment, has been a revelation.

My Kobo

A good day for a parade

We packed up the kids and went to watch the Santa Clause parade today, featuring Faith and George (Santa too)! George is co-chair of the Kof C Toy Drive for the region, so he normally takes Faith in the parade with him to help with the collection.

The weather was pretty much perfect this year - a little sun, just cold enough. Allyson and I took the rest of the kids (successfully fitting three kids' seats in the back of our Escape). We met up with Karen, Cordelia and William and headed to our spot across from the hospital. Free parking at the church, and lots of grass for the kids to roll around on waiting for the parade to start. And, a Tim Horton's across the street at the hospital. Perfect location.

I nominated myself for the Tim's run. The lineup was daunting, but I made it back out of the hospital just as the parade was getting to our spot. With the kids cheering me on, I hoofed it with a tray of hot drinks and made it across the street without spilling a drop.

The kids drank hot chocolate and juice, ate timbits and collected a fistful of candy canes as they watched planes, dogs, horses, singers, bands, grinches, and more go by.

Watching the parade

George and Faith were at the beginning of the parade, collecting the buckets of coin donations for the toy drive. They ended up with a truck full of toys, although financial donations were down 40% this year. Not sure why yet. So, they'll have some work to do to make up for the shortfall.
Toy drive

And the kids got to wave at Santa as he finished off the parade. (Again, with me hoofing it across the street so we wouldn't miss the big guy after I took Blake to the bathroom.)

A good way to spend a Saturday morning.

Happy 3rd Birthday Logan!

A special occasion this week - my niece's 3rd birthday! We celebrated with chocolate cake, ice cream, and wine (for the adults) on Thursday evening. Logan was her normal adorable, and intelligent, self. (The kid sounds like she's been in school for 5 years already.) She's already registered for JK next fall...where did the time go?

Sunday Stills: Teacups

The Sunday Stills challenge this week, Teacups, was an easy one for me. I've got a little collection of teacups in my front hall that are "for looking at", but my favourite teacups are the ones I actually drink out of of. I've shown one of them in the blog before, but in this case, I decided to showcase half the set - they are red, black, and green, two of each. And, I swear they make tea taste better. Plus, they are dishwasher safe! Perfection!

Sunday Stills: Meal time

The challenge this week was "Meal time". The idea was to take a picture that involved at least three different foods. For some reason I wasn't on the ball this week and forgot about the challenge until Friday.

But, again, the cameraphone came to the rescue when the kids and I hit Boston Pizza for lunch with Karen, Cordelia, and William on Saturday. My quesadilla, salsa, and salad qualifies for three different foods (and more if you count all the ingredients. :) And, yummy too.

A request for Happy Halloween photos

At the request of Gramma, I am posting some happy halloween photos instead of the sad one I posted on Sunday. :)

OK...maybe not happy, but having fun pretending to be a "Dragon Pirate". Arrgghh maties!

Arrrrgghh

And, here's our happy witch:

Witch!

And here's the, mostly, happy crew. Jordyn was not into being Frankenstein at all. Although I find it amusing that it looks like Logan is trying to pull her head off -- an appropriate activity for a dragon. So, we had two dragons and two pirates (including costume mashups) a witch, and frankenstein. An excellent representation.

Sunday Stills: Halloween

The challenge this week was Halloween.

The first one is my "Sad Dragon". Blake decided he did not like his costume, which is a pirate dragon, and pouted about it for about 5 seconds. He is over it now. The thought of all the candy he's going to get cheered him up. :)

For this one, we turned off all the lights and I set the camera on the table to get a shot of the halloween house that my niece, Ava, created. The purple is a little purple light her mom put on the inside.

And, because it was so cute, I had to get a shot of the house from the top too.

Sunday Stills: Fall Foliage

This week's Sunday Stills is Fall Foliage. It's a little late for us to get great pictures of fall foliage. I've been on the lookout all week, but it's either been dreary or raining. Today it was doing both again, but I managed to get a shot of this maple leaf on my way home from groceries. A little bit of processing to enhance the mood, and here it is:

Calgary: Out of the comfort zone

Now that my 365 day project is done, I'm at a bit of a crossroads with the photography thing. I don't want to be forced to take a picture to a deadline for a long while yet. But, I still want to take pictures and get out of my comfort zone.

George and I went to Calgary for the weekend -- a sort of mini-working-vacation. I was helping him out at a tradeshow / seminar event. My first one. I met lots of interesting people and learned that, yes, I could wear high heels for three days straight. My feet actually felt funny when I put on my flat shoes Sunday night.

Because we were downtown Calgary, we were pretty much a short walk from everything. The Calgary Tower was across the street, and Stephen Avenue (a historic walking/shopping district) was a half block away. So, all of this made for some interesting, and different, pictures.

I posted a few of them, including the ones with snow, for my Sunday Stills project.

But, here are some extras. We  hit the Calgary Tower on Sunday night after a very tasty dinner, and a few drinks (I ordered a glass of wine, they brought me a half litre - happy days). You travel 525 feet up an elevator to get to the top of the tower. There, you can stand on a glass floor and look down at the city street below. A little freaky. Here's my self-portrait shot doing this.

My feet on the glass floor

And, just to prove George is conquering his fear of heights (or maybe had too many double caesars at supper), he did it too! (Note: He admitted after the trip that he's closer to flying to Europe...maybe even next year! I'm writing this down so I can show it to him in 6 months.)

Yes - that's George in the tower on the glass floor

But, my favourite shot from the weekend is the one I took on the way to dinner. We were walking along Stephen Avenue when I saw this man sleeping on a bench at the base of a sculpture. I took one of him from the front, but as I walked past I saw the contrast between the Indigospirit storefront and this poor guy. (And it was damn cold too.) I've always wanted to have the guts to take a picture like this (strange, I know). And I'm glad that I did it as I think it tells an interesting, if incomplete, story.

Contrasts - the street vs the mall

Sunday Stills: Cars

Yes...I know that it's actually Tuesday night and I'm just posting my Sunday Stills for this week: Cars. George and I have been in Calgary since Thursday and just got back last night, so I've been catching up today.

In honour of the big city, you'll note a certain theme to this week's photos. The first one was Friday morning, when it started snowing! Yes, snowing. I'm just not ready for this one. The hotel across the street had a steady stream of taxis out front, so I got this shot through my hotel window.

Snow!

And more snow, with cars and a city bus waiting for the light.

Snow!

Next, cars from 525 feet up in the Calgary Tower, looking down through the glass floor:

Next week, I'll try to be a little more on time.

Happy 60th Birthday!

My mom turned 60 last week, so we celebrated with a big party organized by my Dad, with some last minute decorating help from my Aunt and I, and some strategic wine testing by my husband and brothers [guest edit by George].
The party was supposed to be a surprise but, as most people know, my Dad can't keep a secret worth a damn. So, the cat was out of the bag about a month ago. (We KNEW he wouldn't be able to hold it in.)
Despite the lack of surprise, the party was still a big success. About 65 friends and family had a buffet meal to celebrate while sipping [chugging] punch and Erie Shores wine.
For entertainment, the grandkids did a little poem for Gramma as well, written by Faith. Each of the kids got to hold up a decorated letter that stood for one word, and they either said (or had help saying):
G reat
R eally fun
A rtistic
M agnificent
M arvellous\
Y oung (ish)

Happy Birthday Mom! (More party pictures...) (And Happy Anniversary to the parents - 39 years on Saturday.)

Sunday Stills: Billboards

This week's Sunday Stills challenge was Billboards. When I saw this one go up, I knew it was going to be pretty tough -- we just don't have that many billboards in our area, at least not interesting ones like you see when you are driving around the US (the king of billboards).

So, here are my non-traditional billboards.

The first one is courtesy of the farm market I stop at for fruits and veggies on the drive home. I took this one with the cellphone as I was on my way out of the parking lot after stocking up with Thanksgiving veggies.

The sign at Herrle's

And, here's a throwaway attempt - a homemade billboard at the fruit and veggie stand near my parents' farm. It reminds me that sweet corn season is almost done. Sigh. I'll let you decide if it qualifies as a billboard.

365 days later

On September 24, 2010, I officially finished a year of taking pictures. I can  hardly believe it.

The whole thing started out with an email from January to our group of photo friends. She asked if anyone was interested in a 365 days project -- taking a picture a day for an entire year. At the time I was on my Ireland/England trip for two weeks, so I was already taking a bazillion pictures a day. What was 351 more days? Right.

Anyhow, my first picture started with a bang, although a little foggy. The Cliffs of Mohr:

September 25, 2009

Things got pretty eclectic from there. Over the year, I've taken a picture of a complete stranger in the parking lot at Walmart, a minor celebrity (Anna Olsen), and too many pictures of my family to count. I've taken pictures of toys, tea cups, flowers, footwear, and food. I've also documented injuries, surgeries, and sickness.

Through the whole year, I've been posting my pictures publicly on flickr, which then show up in facebook. So, I've gotten some lovely comments along the way, and a few people "in real life" talking to me about photography when I least expected it. It's been a great learning experience, on the taking side and the developing side (Adobe Lightroom is the best software program EVAH!).

Lessons learned?

  • Have a camera with you all the time. My cameraphone got me through many days. I even took to  driving to and from work with the camera in the trunk.
  • It's not the camera, it's the photographer (although good lenses really help).
  • A piece of white bristol board and a willing assistant are a photographer's best friend.
  • (Almost) anything can be a picture with the right composition.
  • You've got to work at inspiration. Some days it just doesn't come to you, so you're sitting there taking pictures of marbles
  • I heart Adobe Lightroom.
The only bump over the 365 days, which I discovered on the last Friday of my project, is that I missed ONE DAY! I couldn't believe it, but April 3rd has no picture. I'm pretty sure I actually took one as it was Easter weekend, but somehow it either didn't get off my camera, or I accidentally deleted it. I have to say I was pretty upset when I figured this out. So, I vented to my photo friends and they basically kicked me in the butt -- what's one day in 365? I kept at it, which is what counts.

Oddly enough, the only day I really felt a lot of pressure to take a "perfect" shot was the last day. What should I do to end it all? I was talking to A. at work, and she nailed it for me. Self-portrait. So, here's the shot, me holding a mirror, standing next to my back patio window where I've taken many, many shots over the year, happy to be done.

Catching up on some birthday wishes

September was a bit of a crazy month, so I'm a little bit behind on the blog postings.

We had a couple of family birthdays in September. First, we attended a kid-tastic birthday party for my nephew, who turned 5 this year. The party was at one of those indoor play gyms where the kids can run around like crazy for 2 hours. Somehow we fit in snacks and cupcakes. The birthday boy actually doesn't like cake, so he ate cucumbers instead. (If you're a parent, this means you get to have a certain smug smile on your face when you say, "He hates cake, but he loves vegetables!")

Five year old

The next birthday was my brother, Duncan. He's a year younger than I am, so I won't be revealing his age. But, as you can see from the picture, you can tell that Faith comes by the red hair naturally. (And, you'd be surprised how often I can say, "Faith gets her red hair from my brother" without getting some really odd looks.)

Sunday Stills: Red & Green

Someone asked me this week what this Sunday Stills thing is all about. Sunday Stills is a blog written by a couple of photographers. Each Sunday, they post a photo challenge. You have one week to get a photo and then post it on the blog the next Sunday.

This week's Sunday Stills challenge is Red and Green. Since it's not Christmas, I thought this one was going to be a giant pain, mostly because I'm only a fan of red and green together at Christmas time. But, then, I looked at the trees around our place, and their brilliant fall colors.

The  kids and I went for a walk Thursday night. The mission: find red leaves. We came home with handful, although by the time we got home it was too dark to get a decent picture. A nice reminder that fall equals shorter days. So, I wrapped them in some waxed paper and put them in the fridge. Crafty, eh? The next day I braved the wind and got a shot of the leaf in our backyard. The kids used the rest for a "craft project".

Sunday Stills: The Letter S

For this week's Sunday Stills challenge, The Letter S, I took the opportunity while I was waiting to meet some friends for supper near the downtown.

The first one was stairs. These were on the side of a building that's being converted into condos.

September 22, 2010

The second one is, apparently, a "standpipe". It's also steel, so double-hit with the "s".

Sunday Stills: Flags

The challenge this week, Flags, had me on the lookout for flags everywhere I went. Strangely, I couldn't find many! So, the first one I took a little closer to home -- the back of my car. The reflection is purely accidental, but I thought it was a nice touch.

Flags

This one I took out the front windshield on the way home from a weekend in Kingston with my brothers and their families. Not too bad for a dirty windshield, speeding down the highway. (And thanks to George for spotting it for me.)

Grade 4

Faith started Grade 4 this week. (Grade 4!!!!) None of us were sure how it would go. Faith found out on the weekend that her best friend wouldn't be in her class, so she was pretty bummed and nervous about her first day. It didn't bode well.

But, when I picked her up at our sitter, Karen's, Faith was walking about 5 feet off the ground. Karen said she talked the whole way home, and I don't think she'd stopped by the time I picked her up. "My teacher was really FUN and my class is right next to L's and the classes do lots of things together and we've got two field trips already and we're going to the ZOO! and we've got a spelling test on Tuesday and ...." So far, grade 4 is looking like it will be a pretty good year.

First day of grade 4

Another weekend, another horse show

You may be detecting a theme this summer, and that theme would be horse shows. We've done three! This last one was at my hometown fair, so it was a great chance to see our families and see Faith, my dad, and Sydney show off their horse skills. George's parents even came up from Florida for the event. So, it was a mini family reunion.

First up for Faith was the carriage driving class. She drove Indigo, Sydney's horse, and for those horse lovers out there, they drove bitless -- no  metal piece in the horse's mouth. For this class, it's mandatory to have an adult with the kid, so Sydney is sitting next to her, holding the whip. As Faith explained, "That thing's too heavy for me." Faith's hands aren't big enough to hold the reins and the whip at the same time. But this year, at least, her feet can touch the floor of the carriage. She ended up with a second in the class, partly because she wasn't holding her own whip! (I could insert some sort of stage mother comment here, but I'll let the exclamation point speak for itself.) She did a great job!

Faith's carriage class

Next up was the costume class. Thanks to the dollar store, we had lots of skulls, pirate hats, etc. to decorate Faith and Indigo, who was a very good sport about the whole thing.

Costume class - pirates

Then it was Blake's turn -- stick pony race time! Note the pirate look. He was devastated when Indigo took his pirate hat, so he spent the previous 15 minutes crying (note the runny makeup). He snapped out of it as soon as he got his hat back, and wouldn't change out of it for the pony race. Just him and all the ladies.

Stick pony race - as a pirate

He didn't win the race, but he gave it a good try. He should have won for fashion statement, at the very least. The spiderman face and pirate hat were priceless.

20100903-IMG_3296-230-20100903

After a quick break, Faith rode Indigo in the next class. I know...she's on the lead line, which Faith finds particularly galling. ("I don't need a lead line!") But that's the only class she can ride in on Fridays, so lead line it was. Sydney had the honours again. And Faith finished third. Why? The judge told her she needed to be paying more attention. She was busy looking around at the great grandparents, her great aunt, her Nana, and Papa, her grampa, her dad, her brother...you get the idea. Basically, she was way too relaxed, which is kind of a good thing in my book. But, she was sitting up much straighter than at her first riding competition, which even the judge remarked on.

Indigo and Faith - riding

For her next class, Faith took the judge's comments to heart and actually paid attention! It was showmanship, and she got first prize because "I was the only one who knew my squares." (To which I replied, "What are squares?") From my meagre knowledge of horse showmanship (my years of dairy showmanship with 4-H doesn't translate), the class involves trotting the horse, walking the horse, and then standing it properly. The class was huge--about 10 kids--so Faith was pretty excited to get first. I think the skull and cross-bones on her cheek helped her along too.

Showmanship - Faith

Sydney and Indigo are both very good for Faith. Faith loves both of them and would happily spend every waking moment with horses and Sydney, so we really appreciate the time Sydney takes with her.

But of course, it wasn't just a show for Faith. My Dad had his two-year-old, Stormy, out again for carriage and showmanship classes. She was mighty pretty...Dad didn't look too bad either. But he's always so serious when he's driving.

Driving the pattern - Grampa

And, of course, Sydney got her horse back to do her driving and showmanship classes, in which she won multiple prizes.

Not enough pictures for you? You can see the entire horse show/fair set on flickr.
